Whether they can do productive work in this economy is another story, and that's where the cultishness comes in. You might really like hard work if you thought that what you were producing was worthwhile and valued...your father may get that feeling of value from getting paid (or some of it), but he may also get that feeling of value from being able to help provide for his family.Jeff Pollethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13789663140920958914noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28989955.post-79062098574073684352007-11-23T08:26:00.000-08:002007-11-23T08:26:00.000-08:00STF--That's great that you have a men's group, and...STF--That's great that you have a men's group, and that y'all discuss such issues!Jeff Pollethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13789663140920958914noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28989955.post-51679117061866538982007-11-21T20:16:00.000-08:002007-11-21T20:16:00.000-08:00My own situation is rather... interesting... in th...My own situation is rather... interesting... in this regard. I'm a 25 year old college graduate, and I've been job-free since September 2006. Quite simply, I took one look at the corporate rat race, and wanted out. I firmly believe that there are no jobs that I would both enjoy and that I would be able to get and keep. (I immediately start to resent anything that becomes an obligation - if you paid me to play video games, I'd start hating them.) As a result, my parents have been supporting me, but they are not happy about it.

My father, especially, views my "sitting in front of a computer screen all day" as a worthless activity. When I tell him that he, too, sits in front of a computer screen all day, he replies, "People pay me. They don't pay you." I've tried very hard to reject the cult of work and productivity, but it's really difficult and not good for my emotional health.

Sigh...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28989955.post-18055723824615505632007-11-21T10:54:00.000-08:002007-11-21T10:54:00.000-08:00I'm with you. My wife is very supportive, so I realize my fears and anxieties around this are mine.

Fortunately I'm in a men's group where this is one of the issues we can discuss. That's one way men can help each other.Sweating Through foghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07138602196953744517noreply@blogger.com
