It is carefully left out. I do not understand how anyone who has seen an ultra sound can believe that ending the life of a developing child is a "choice".

To you, that is probably as incredible as your views are to me, and this is not a blog about abortion.

I can assure you, though, that if male feminists insist in adapting wholesale all the rhetoric and assumptions of radical feminism, we will convince very, very few of our fellow men.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the comment. On a few things - very few, really - there can be no common ground.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28989955.post-31391099353528097932007-11-06T15:44:00.000-08:002007-11-06T15:44:00.000-08:00Jim W--It's likely going to matter what you mean b...Jim W--

It's likely going to matter what you mean by 'oppose abortion'--at least to me (though this isn't 'my' movement!). In all cases, everywhere? In societies where women are raped? If you and I were going to do any feminist work around abortion rights together, we'd want to answer some of those questions. But I try to find some common ground in various areas, even if I don't agree with everything somebody says, so I'd want to talk with you about what it's like to be an at-home husband and dad and such, as regards some feminist stances, even if we don't agree on abortion in general.

There are certainly those who identify as feminists who 'oppose abortion' in some ways. Hugo (in our blogroll) for one is against abortion personally.

Feminists are a diverse lot.Jeff Pollethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13789663140920958914noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28989955.post-30622541775456723332007-11-06T15:11:00.000-08:002007-11-06T15:11:00.000-08:00I wonder if there is a place in your movement for ...I wonder if there is a place in your movement for those who oppose abortion? This is an interesting blog, but it is clearly intended only for those who share a left-wing political perspective.

Now don't get me wrong - I am leading the life of a feminist man, and my wife is definitely a feminist.

In fact, I am now the "at-home husband and dad" that is still a new phenomenon.

Two years ago I was Mr. Pinstriped and Shiny-Shoed Corporate Executive, committed to my job and my office. Today, my wife is in the full time work force, and I am home - as we agreed to do.

We traded places: I took off those shiny Italian shoes while she put hers on; I hung up my fancy pinstripes and my tie, put down the briefcase and left the office behind while I gave her the keys to the Lexus and she started going to her office - something which my father would and mother would never have done.

So I know what it is like to live a life based on feminist principles. But neither one of us is a typical left-winger in our political views and neither is a supporter of abortion. As long as that barrier remains, there will be no place for someone like me among the feminist men you speak to.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28989955.post-52135490391763453362007-09-24T08:16:00.000-07:002007-09-24T08:16:00.000-07:00thanks for the comments, brightbluelizard!thanks for the comments, brightbluelizard!Jeff Pollethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13789663140920958914noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28989955.post-49462856951526858202007-09-23T16:01:00.000-07:002007-09-23T16:01:00.000-07:00Excellent!! It's easy when you're part of a class that is in some ways oppressed, to feel that the "other" side doesn't need help -they should just change! (I say this as a woman). Nonetheless, education, support & guidance is vital for the privileged classes to change (I say this as a formerly clueless white racist. It's extremely hard, once you've internalized oppression to finally realize the truth -AND then make a big impact for truth! How much more difficult will it be then, for the privileged? My own experience is that racism & sexism (& all the other "isms") stems mostly from ignorance & a feeling of being left out.
Besides, we feminists cannot claim that feminism allows men to finally build healthy relationships, express their emotions, blah, blah, blah -if we casually dismiss their emotional needs.
Most importantly, positive change that is permanent will take not just oppressed classes to stand up for their rights but a total socialization process of ALL people.

Anyway, great posts.
Keep it up!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28989955.post-66575203188977910912007-09-13T16:18:00.000-07:002007-09-13T16:18:00.000-07:00Thanks for saying so, Sassywho...it's always nice ...Thanks for saying so, Sassywho...it's always nice to hear your support.

It's also nice to hear something besides crickets after putting up a longer-thought-out-post. :)Jeff Pollethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13789663140920958914noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28989955.post-87930172812432727682007-09-13T13:41:00.000-07:002007-09-13T13:41:00.000-07:00jeff, this is such a great post. i've been doing ...jeff, this is such a great post. i've been doing a lot of thinking about ally work as of late anyhow.... i hope you still plan on contributing to LMSassywhohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14604276739069071163noreply@blogger.com
